Roger Steffens' Reggae Archives contains more than 10,000 of taped recordings - live shows, radio broadcasts, rare Jamaican singles and albums, demos and other unreleased materials.
Included are 1,400 hours of the Reggae Beat radio program's master tapes, broadcast four hours every Sunday on KCRW, the NPR outlet in L.A. A separate show, Reggae Beat International, in a one-hour format, was syndicated worldwide on 130 stations for 182 weeks from 1983-1987. Both programs provide an oral history of Jamaican music, featuring its greatest stars, often performing live in the studio and sharing their personal histories. The heart of the tape collection is the Bob Marley Archives, with more than 2,000 hours of Wailers' related materials, much of it unreleased.
